Join our Board of Trustees

We’re looking for individuals to join the Habitat Ireland Board of Trustees, to support our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.

What is the role?

As Habitat for Humanity Ireland is both a registered charity and a company, Trustees also serve as Company Directors, with names publicly listed at Companies House/the Companies Registration Office and the Charity Commission/Charities Regulator.

What is the time commitment?

Up to 1 day per month. Board meetings are held 4 times per year during the working day. They are held in-person, last 2/3 hours and there is an opportunity to join online. Ad hoc meetings, online and in person, may also be scheduled. Trustees may also be asked to join the Finance or another sub-committee, meeting in advance of Board meetings.

Who are Habitat for Humanity Ireland?

Habitat for Humanity Ireland is an independent national organisation, part of the global Habitat for Humanity network, with a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We believe that a decent home helps to permanently break the cycle of poverty and allows families to achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance.

To support Habitat for Humanity’s vision of a decent home for everyone, our National Strategy identifies key goals:

  • - Improve housing conditions: for 3,000 households globally and 300 locally. Directly tackle poverty in Ireland by supporting 300,000 individuals (at least 40% from deprived communities) to access affordable DIY and home improvement materials through the network of Habitat ReStores
  • - Transforming housing systems: Develop partnerships and collaborations which increase shelter access and influence local government and policy
  • - Inspire action for housing: Mobilise more than 5,000 local people as volunteers and advocates for affordable housing, sustainable development and global citizenship
  •

About the Board of Trustees

The Habitat for Humanity Ireland Board of Trustees is a group of volunteers with a range of backgrounds and experiences who come together to help guide Habitat Ireland to deliver its strategy and ensure we do our work to the highest possible standards.

The Board works as a team across Ireland, operating in 2 jurisdictions, challenging and supporting the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team with strategic decisions, mobilising resources and opening access to networks and expertise.

This is an exciting time to join Habitat Ireland as we continue to deliver our strategy to scale Habitat ReStore across Ireland; deepening impact for local people as well as growing support for global partner programmes. As a Trustee, you will help shape and support Habitat Ireland on this journey, ensuring our plans are ambitious, inclusive and achievable. You will play a key role in guiding the organisation’s future direction, guided by our vision of a world where everyone has a safe place to live; ensuring our strategy reflects the voices and experiences of the people we support and that our work continues to deliver lasting impact.

Who We Are Looking For?

We are looking to recruit up to four new Trustees. We are particularly looking for the following experience:

  • - Finance management (experience of audit or charity finance would be helpful)
  • - Legal (experience of charity law would be helpful)
  • - People – HR, DEI, Culture, Safeguarding
  • - Brand - marketing, PR and media
  • - Any experience of our strategic areas: social enterprise, circular economy, housing sustainable development
  • - Fundraising and partnerships
  •

We are committed to making this opportunity fully accessible. We strongly encourage applications from disabled people and women, as well as individuals from other underrepresented backgrounds, including from the Global South and those with lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity, to help us build a more diverse and inclusive Board of Trustees.

You do not need to have previous experience of sitting on a Board, or any special qualifications, or to have reached any particular stage in your career. If you’re ready to use your experience, insight or passion to help break down barriers and make a real difference, we would love to hear from you.
